The early 90’s were the heyday of films about growing up in the ghetto. Here we list five of our fave “Growing Up In The Hood” movies that if you haven’t seen, then you’re clearly not from the hood.
1 – Juice (1992)
Starring Omar Epps as “Q” and the late great Tupac Shakur “Bishop”. Four teens from the hood are out trying to get the “Juice”. But one of the gang is only out for himself.

2 – Higher Learning (1995)
Starring Omar Epps (again), Kirsty Swanson, Michael Rapaport, Tyra Banks, Busta Rhymes Ice Cube and many more. Higher learning highlights several tensions that face students from different walks of life have to face when they all have to cohabit on university campus, the main tension being racism.

3 – Menace II Society (1993)
This movie contains a brief cameo by non other than the big homie Samuel L Jackson. This movie is centred around Caine and his short life after graduating from highschool. He’s urged to leave the hood and avoid some of the pitfalls that accompany that lifestyle, but before he has the chance, his past actions catch up with him.

4 – South Central (1992)
Glenn Plummer stars as Bobby Johnson in this story about a former gang member released from prison who wants to leave the gangster life behind him. The only problem is that the son he left behind when he was sentenced wants to follow in his fathers old foot steps.

5 – Boyz N The Hood (1991)
Starring: Ice Cube, Cuba Golding Jr, Morris Chestnut and Laurence Fishburn. Set in Gangland south central LA. This story follows the fortunes and misfortunes of four friends all on different paths.
